⁹ He has saved^(A) us and called^(B) us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done^(C) but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,

² in the hope of eternal life,^(A) which God, who does not lie,^(B) promised before the beginning of time,^(C)

⁴² They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”^(A)

¹⁷ “I’ll send you a young goat^(A) from my flock,” he said.

“Will you give me something as a pledge^(B) until you send it?” she asked.

⁸ This is what the Lord says:

²⁰ As silver, copper, iron, lead and tin are gathered into a furnace to be melted with a fiery blast, so will I gather you in my anger and my wrath and put you inside the city and melt you.^(A)
